Frequently Asked Questions

What are microgreens and spouts?

Microgreens and sprouts are your favorite vegetables just in baby form. Many of us have been conditioned to only eat adult vegetables. In order to develop into full maturity, adult vegetables take months to grow.  On the other hand, microgreens and sprouts only take days to grow. Usually anywhere from 4 - 14 days. During this time, these greens are in their purest forms. They are compact, electric, and filled with nutrient dense benefits.

What is the difference between a microgreen versus a sprouts?

Sprouts are not planted in soil or any other growing medium. They can easily be grown using jars or similar containers, but require quite a bit of care during the growing process.  The sprouts are ready for consumption in 3-5 days and both the seed and the plant are consumed by the end user.

Microgreens are grown in soil or on a hydroponic grow pad. They are cut off at the soil surface, so only the stems and leaves are consumed.

Light is an issue. Sprouts don’t require a light source to grow, which may be a consideration for some people. Growing microgreens does require a light source to help the plants “green up" and receiver their chlorophyll.  For the best results, specific types of grow lights are needed to obtain optimal results.

Soil or water? Sprouts require only water rather than soil and must be rinsed at least a couple of times per day. Microgreen seeds require a growing medium that can be actual soil or a soil substitute or grow pad. Growers frequently argue the benefits of different growing mediums for microgreens, and it may pay to explore the various options available.

Ventilation is also a concern.  Sprouts do not require much ventilation, but microgreens do.  In most cases, providing adequate ventilation can be done by setting up several fans, but you may also need to use supplemental heating and cooling to obtain ideal growing conditions.

How to consume microgreens and sprouts?

Microgreens and sprouts are more than just a garnish or topping you find in a fancy restaurant. They are a complete food and should be consumed in large amounts. Micros and sprouts should never be cooked. Due to the high heat of cooking, many beneficial nutrients will be killed off. They can be added AFTER to any cooked dish. It's best to eat them in their rawest form.  These little greens are a great addition to any salad or as a salad replacement. They go fantastic with sandwiches, smoothies, soups, and dips. They can be added to eggs, fish, meat or poultry. The ideas are endless on how to use them.
How to store or keep them?

Cut microgreens and sprouts should be refrigerated and stored in a cool place. However living microgreens in soil, should never be put in the fridge. This may cause them to receive frost bite. Living micros should be placed on a kitchen counter and watered once a day (little to no light is required). They should be watered about half a cup. Only after they have been cut, can they be placed in the fridge. If you can't eat your micros in a timely manner, they can be frozen and used for a later time. One trick to have them last even longer, is to wash them in ice cold water prior to storing them in the fridge. Just remember to dry them off before storing. Excess moisture and water can turn microgreens soggy  in their containers if not dried properly.
How long do they last?

Microgreens and sprouts are the freshest things you can consume. They are delicate and refined baby plants. Our microgreens have a shelf life about one to two weeks. It is recommended to consume them quickly sooner rather than later.

Do you wash them?

The short answer is no. If you must, you can wash them with clean filtered watered. Tap water has too many contaminants. Also only wash the microgreens that you are going to consume. Microgreens that have been washed and placed back in container can start to turn and become bad.

How do we grow our microgreens and sprouts?

Our microgreens are grown with an abundance of love. They are grown in a controlled, indoor climate with overhead lighting. Everything is done intensively by hand, from watering to seeding. We grow with healing crystals, a 432 hz. pulse generator, and use the cleanest water (reverse osmosis.) They are never sprayed with any chemicals. They are clean, pure and natural. We use the finest, non-gmo seed from True Leaf Market and Mumms. We grow in BPA free, food grade, heavy duty trays from Bootstrap Farmer. We use the best soil from Sun Gro. At the end of each seeding ceremony, we pray for these little guys and show gratitude for the opportunity to provide nutrient dense food for our family, friends and community.
